This movie looks interesting. I don’t think it will be anything special, but I do think it will be fun.

Chronicle: an innovative, super hero, origins story.

Now wait. Before you go and dismiss this as ‘just another superhero film’, gimme a minute to tell you what sets this quiet picture apart from the factory surplus of Marvel and DC films. First, unlike Marvel and DC’s vibrant, star studded, blockbusters; Chronicle is centered more around a big story and fully developed characters and less on big explosions and fully developed bra sizes. In other words, it is a far cry from anything Michael Bay.

Another way in which Chronicle sets itself apart is by how it is shot. The entire film is captured in the first person/documentary style. Surprisingly enough, it works. It works because it leverages clever plot points (which I will not spoil) that allow the camera to pan out and find focused and clean angles. This completely eliminates the grainy, shaky, claustrophobic feel that embodies similarly shot movies like The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield.

Lastly, what truly makes Chronicle a movie worth watching is the acting. The story is focused around the life Andrew (played by Daan Dehaan), a shy, awkward, and very misfortunate, high school student. Dehaan does a remarkable job. Although the film follows the viewpoint of Andrew, the story is really about his cousin Alex (played by Alex Russell) and the emotional change he that he undertakes. I was really impressed at how this film had a true protagonist and antagonist. Remember this people, the key word in character development is development. A good story need to have a character that undergoes change. Chronicle does that and so much more.

I highly recommend checking this film out. You won’t regret it.

The Fighter HD Trailer

Another Film that is new to DVD is The FIghter starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, and Amy Adams.

The Fighter is less about boxing and more about Mickey Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and his relationship with his dysfunctional family, mainly his brother Dicky (Christian Bale).

Christian Bale plays an outstanding role as Dicky Eklund (don’t ask me to explain how they are related. It’s complicated). With his recent films, I had begun to lose respect for Christian Bale’s acting. This is his comeback! This will make you forget about Terminator Salvation.

Mark Wahlberg fits the role and does a fine job and what’s not to like about Amy Adams.

The Movie itself is enjoyable. It’s a true story with good acting and above average cinematography. It’s worth watching, but don’t go into the movie expecting a Rocky flick or something like Remember the Titans.

This is a character driven drama, but it is worth the watch.

Warrior HD Trailer

New to hit DVD, is Warrior starring Joel Edgerton, Tom Hardy, and Nick Nolte.

Warrior offers nothing new. Instead of reinventing the wheel, it simply takes the best of what has already been designed and slams it altogether. Now, I know this might not sound good, but it works. Warrior offers great acting, cool fighting (MMA style), and writing that will melt your face (aka make you cry). The film is basically Cinderella Man with a modern MMA twist.

Simply put, it is worth watching.

Invincible by Image Comics is a far cry away from my normal comic read, which consists of all things Marvel and nothing else. I decided to give it a shot after it was highly recommended to me by the owner of my local comic shop.

I read the first 74 comics in under a week.

I must say, Invincible is refreshing. It breaks the mold of your typical comic and keeps you involved with good writing, interesting characters, and cool, vibrant art. I highly recommend picking up the first volume at Epic Comics.

You’ll thank me.
